Help me turn this into a good essay. The Hunt for Red October. No B.S.?

I need this to be more descriptive, and just all around better. i do not have the time to work on this right now because i have to read dante's inferno, then i have to read a book on dante's inferno, and then i have to wright an essay on dante's inferno. please help.

To anyone who has seen the movie, reading this book will even be more exciting. The world’s newest and most advanced submarine built by the Russians , the Red October is heading to the US to defect. His superiors did not learn about it until it was too late. It’s skipper, Marko Ramius designed it and it is almost undetectable even to the other Russian submarines. It was supposed to participate in a training exercise but the other Russian vessels lost track of it. They did not know what it was up to and their orders were to find and destroy it before the Americans get hold of it. But they could not find her. Marko Ramius mentored most of the submarine officers and he knew all the tricks to elude them. All the naval activities aroused the suspicion of the Americans because they were running around in the Atlantic Ocean, their territory. They called in a specialist, Jack Ryan to analyse the motives of the Russians. Ryan is a historical novelist who now and then does some work for the CIA. He guessed it right that the Red October plans to defect. The Yanks even borrowed the “Invincible” from the Brits because most of their carriers are out of action because of repairs or too far away to be recalled. They trailed the Russians and intimidated them and had some casualties. One of their jets was shot down. They could not retaliate. The Russians now just ignored them and proceeded to look for their missing sub. One genius sonar man discovered an unusual sound and it was the Red October. They were finally able to catch up with it and Ryan and a British officer who spoke Russian boarded it to guide it to port. Actually Ramius sabotage the submarine to make it look like some mishap to force them to land somewhere. The American navy took out the serial number and put it into another wreckage to fool the Russians that the Red October sank. They took the crew with the exclusion of Ramius and some of his trusted officers to shore and repatriated them to their homeland. They were asked if they wanted to defect but they declined and were sent home. They later found out that it would have been better if they defected as they were subjected to harassment as to what has happened to their submarine The Russian fleet proceeded to head home but they left a few to look around in case they discover something. The skipper of one Russian sub who served under Ramius later sensed and recognise the distinctive sound of the Red October being escorted and it fired on it without awaiting authorisation from his superiors as otherwise he would lose track of it. The Red October was hit a but it did not sink. The American escorts could not fire back because of strict orders only to defend themselves if fired upon. Ramius trained the skipper of the Russian submarine so he knew how to outsmart him. As the Alfa fired again and this time it was a torpedo with a safety device, they were able to evade it. With the cunning of Ramius and the approval of Skipper Mancuso, an American skipper to help him navigate it safely to American territory they decided to meet the Alfa head on and they collided and with Red October’s massive size it upturned and sank the Russian submarine. Mancuso guided it to port well concealed and met by two American officers. The Russians would never know the Yanks have outsmarted them.

Should i remain loyal?

I am presented with a dilemma. I am part of a lucrative military free trade agreement. My ally and i enjoy large supply trade and are making excellent progress in securing the last enemy controlled area, but as the divisions are moving i am thinking of attacking him, a victory against my unsuspecting ally would give me strategic dominance in the lake network in which we are operating. The tactical situation is: He has a bigger airforce but not by much. My land army vastly outnumbers his, as does my navy which has two aircraft carriers loaded with f14s and a large escort fleet to shell his base. A surprise attack after a large build up in his base would almost certainly yield my desired response although i feel somewhat cowardly attacking him. What do you recommend?

should I invest in another kennel for my cat?

I bought him one like two years ago. cheap. It held good for the one time we took him out which was for the vet. similar to this one Click Here

it is missing now like two of the plastic screws. I could fix that with the plastic strips...like these. Click Here

THE problem is that I have always found the cage a bit cramped for my cat. he does move to turn around but not easily. I am taking him to the vet next month. and what is even worst, it is not that good, he is about 15 pounds and I am afraid that the handle will break which then will cause him to fall in and the door to open with the impact. and I dont wanna lose my baby.

I am going by car though..but there is a chance that I wont be able to take him in car. I might be to paranoid?

Pytanie #4:

Obama won't let US Navy ships defend themselves; isn't that TREASON?

DEBKAfile is reporting that the US Fifth Fleet and US aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower in the Gulf of Oman were not allowed to shoot at an Iranian Fokker F27 aircraft which on April 21 hovered for 20 minutes 900 meters over the carrier and no more than 250 meters away, even though they saw its flight crew gathering intelligence on the Eisenhower and its warship escorts.

DEBKA-Net-Weekly's military sources report that the US Persian Gulf command went public on the incident on April 28, a whole week later, only after Gulf military circles, amazed at the American naval and air units' passivity in the face of hostile surveillance, threatened to break the story to local media.

This striking restraint indicates that the US Gulf and Arabian fleets are under orders to take no action -- certainly not to open fire -- against Iranian naval or air units, without first obtaining permission directly from Washington.

Military, naval and aviation sources told DEBKA-Net-Weekly that the Iranian spy plane was 10 second away from flying directly over the Eisenhower and could easily have been shot down.

To try and explain this incident away, US naval sources Wednesday, April 28, claimed the Iranian plane was unarmed and its encounter with the US carrier was not of a threatening nature, although irregular.

Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, tried to play down the importance of the incident by saying: "The Iranians (pilots) were not provocative or threatening. As long as they are professional and not threatening or reckless, it's international space."

Just like that small boat that came alongside the USS Cole. It wasn't provocative either -- that is until it blew a whole in the hull killing 17 sailors and injuring 39.

Consider, that Fokker can easily carry 18,000 pounds (8,250 kg) of explosives.

According to this report, the distance (hypotenuse) from the Iranian aircraft to the USS Eisenhower was 934.08 meters (3064.6 feet), or a little more than one-half mile away.

With a top speed of 520 kph (323 mph), or approximately 5 miles per minute -- more in a power dive -- it would have taken approximately 6 or 7 seconds for that Fokker to hit the Eisenhower -- hardly time to obtain permission to fire directly from Washington.

Has anyone been or worked with a motor carrier investigator?

I'm trying to find out more info about the job... It's a state civil service position (but federally funded), and I'm just curious if anyone has any insight or advice. I'm a little concerned about safety because it seems to be a non-peace officer non-armed job, but some people seem to be saying you are escorted by a local or state police officer? Specifically I'd probably be working down in New York City. Thanks in advance!
Yeah that's the civil service test I took -- I'm just trying to find out more like candidly about what the job is about since it usually turns out to be different than the civ service formal descriptions from what I've experienced. I appreciate your comments on it, officers, it's strange that different states handle the same task differently like that.

Who would win in a war between the USA and China- i mean right now?

China is a bit angry that the US recently agreed to help Taiwan arm itself and stay independant. Its no secret no more that the only power that can become the next superpower in the world is China.

Because Russia is finished now, its mighty empire is over, Russia is rusting away and its girls and boys are busy selling themselves as escorts.

So just imagine if a war broke out say this week between China and the USA over Taiwan who would win? I mean it appears that America has the biggest and loudest toys in town e.g the latest Stealth plane, Aircraft carriers, precision technology and much much more friends then China?

I mean who would China bring as back up? Pakistan, Iran? Syria or Sudan (pls dont make me laugh). So just imagine if it did happen and the Chinese goal to is to capture Taiwan and integrate into the Republic of China, and the American goal is to preserve Taiwanese independance, who would win?

Also dont forget Chinas been around 4000 yrs whilst America was carved out only 200 yrs ago? so whaddya think?

Why usa always lie when it comes to war they claim they (us) won the war blaah?

Midway Island Demolished.... Yorktown destroyer sunk.

The United States Navy suffered another blow in its attempt to stem the Japanese juggernaut ravaging the Pacific Ocean. Midway Island, perhaps the most vital U.S. outpost, was pummeled by Japanese Naval aviators. The defending U.S. forces, consisting primarily of antique Buffalo fighters, were completely wiped out while the Japanese attackers suffered few, if any, losses.

In a nearby naval confrontation, the Japanese successfully attacked the Yorktown which was later sunk by a Japanese submarine. A destroyer lashed to the Yorktown was also sunk.

American forces claim to have sunk four Japanese carriers and the cruiser Mogami but those claims were vehemently denied by the Emperor's spokesman.

The American carriers lost an entire squadron of torpedo planes when they failed to link up with fighter escorts. The dive bombers had fighter escort even though they weren't engaged by enemy fighters

Code Broken

The failure at Midway is even more disheartening because the U.S. Navy knew the Japanese were coming. Secret documents provided to the NY Times showed that "Magic" intercepts showed the Japanese planned to attack Midway, which they called "AF".

My new house number is 119?

How can I make myself entertained with numbers about this new house number? Is there a pattern in the sqaures or somethink? ;)

It also means so many different things:

In mathematics
119 is a Perrin number, preceded in the sequence by 51, 68, 90 (it is
the sum of the first two mentioned).
119 is the sum of five consecutive primes (17 + 19 + 23 + 29 + 31). It
is a highly cototient number.

In mathematics, the Perrin numbers are defined by the recurrence
relation

P(0) = 3, P(1) = 0, P(2) = 2,
and

P(n) = P(n - 2) + P(n - 3) for n > 2.

Nuclear war scenario for History homework - what do you think ?

Okay , we have been asked for homework to write a East bloc v. Western bloc war scenario. So here is a summary of my primary idea for it ; - tell me what you think , or what I need to improve ETC - any advice appreciated

It's 1983 , Reagan is in power as the US president (obviously) and tensions with the Soviet Union begin to build. Operation Able Archer '83 ends on the 11th of November , but leaves a noticeable feeling of hostility and mistrust between the two sides. The Soviet Union , in the December begins to suffer vast fuel shortages , weakening its economy. The US domination of the Persian gulf prevents the Soviets being able to purchase the necessary amount of Oil from the region to revitalize its economy. In an attempt to force the US into a position where it has to consent to the Soviet Union purchasing oil from the region , the Politburo orders Warsaw Pact forces to blockade West Berlin. However , this time , a much more dangerous scenario occurs than in 1949 , The Soviet Union vows to shoot down any NATO aircraft that enters the airspace of East Germany , effectively cutting the West Berlin off from the west. As the people imprisoned behind the Berlin wall find that supplies are running low , negotiations fail. And the American Strategic Nuclear Forces reduce to a status of Def con 3. Pershing II missile which could hit the russian capital within eight minutes of their launch are deployed across western Europe , intensifying the situation.

In the February of 1984 , The Berlin Brigade is mobilized and this action makes the Soviet Union feel increasingly threatened. Soviet TU-95 Patrols begin to penetrate American airspace undeterred by the intercepting American fighter aircraft. Then , in march , a squadron of Soviet bombers is detected heading towards Anchorage (Alaska) , Fighter jets are scrambled to meet them , however , they continue , despite warning shots being fired across their path. The US air force decides to take action and orders that they shoot the bombers down if they penetrate US airspace - they do. Relations between the Kremlin and Pentagon fall to an all time low , and the US government decides to prepare the NATO forces in Europe for an all out war with the Soviet Union.

A massive Convoy is readied which contains military supplies and troops destined for Europe , on hearing this , the Soviet Union decide to mount a massive naval blockade , running from the tip of Southern Norway , to the Northern spain , and announce passing it will be an act of war. The US convoy , escorted by Royal navy escorts , penetrates it , and a massive naval battle ensues. After the first hour over 15% of the Convoy is destroyed, but then the tide turns and the US and British navies manage to use the air superiority provided by their aircraft carriers in the area to attack the soviet fleet damaging and sinking it. The Atlantic shipping lanes remain open , but world war three has begun.

Last ditch diplomatic efforts come to nothing , and across Europe , governments begin to broadcast terrifying civil defense programs. Now the NATO forces in Europe are fully mobilized and a period of non-action passes. Then in May , the Soviets surprise everyone and invade Iran and Iraq. NATO forces in Europe are ordered to begin an advance into East Germany to free West Berlin and deter the soviet action , meanwhile , the US scrambles bombers to attack a massive Soviet airbase set up in Iran. The bombers are attacked by fighter aircraft and shot down , so , in a chilling turn of events the US air-blast a nuclear bomb over the airbase. The airbase is destroyed but in response The Soviets authorize a attack on the West German capital Bonn using biological weapons. Now , the US decides to respond in kind , Strategic Air Command authorizes nuclear attacks on Vladivostok , Leningrad and Murmansk as part of a response to show their resolve.

In response attacks early warning stations across the UK attacking with bombers armed with conventional , non-nuclear weapons as well as attacking New York , New Orleans and Newport News with ICBMs. The USA sees no alternative. Strategic air Command takes to the air and SIOP is initiated. The Soviet Union launches its Nuclear weapons in response , and targets across Europe and America are destroyed - in total 4000 megatons are exchanged.

So what do you think - any comments ?

Pytanie #14:

uss constitution? frigates of Navy? about Naval history? and confusing of hull number?

1. First I read that frigates was appeared in Navy during WW2 as a destroyer escort then became frigate. And I read another thing that President Washington signed a law to make six frigates: Constitution, Constellation, Congress, United States, President, Chesapeake.
I don't understand it. Is it because of the time that six frigates were made was Continental Navy, not U.S. Navy?

2. So, is USS Constitution the oldest warship of the Navy designed Frigate?

3. Every ship has a number likes USS Port Royal (CG 73), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and USS Maine (SSBN 741), etc.
What does that number mean?
In USS Abraham Lincoln, the book says the number 72 means that the ship is the 72nd aircraft carrier authorized for construction. Oh my God, I can't believe it. If so, what about USS Maine?
Is she the 741st submarine authorized for construction? Does it mean that there was 740 submarine before her?
I need explain, please.
Thank you.

Modern battleship design?

Why does one of our enemies not build a warship specifically to take out a carrier group. I envision this ship to be around 65,000 tons. highly automated with a Small crew to limit loss of life when it goes down and i have no doubt it would but not before mission was accomplished. it would bristle with anti aircraft missiles to defend its self. it would bristle with anti ship missiles with state of the art amor to protect crew and ship vitals. for anti submarine protection it would need escorts but to survive anything short of nuke it would be very compartmentalized. I would like a speed of around 37 knots which is just possible any thoughts can it be built, would it work if not why not? one last thought should it follow the all or nothing armor concept or should that be modified?
Everyone asks why build it?Well there is only one reason I fully realize you could get all that capability in a group of smaller weapons cheaper its just that I would love to see the dam thing! Imagine the technology the good ol USA could put in a ship like that. It would be a magnificient sight to see.

Pet Owners. What do you think of the first ever Pet Airlines? Details inside->?

Paws up: All-pet airline hits skies

NEW YORK – One trip for their Jack Russell terrier in a plane's cargo hold was enough to convince Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel that owners needed a better option to get their pets from one city to another.

On Tuesday, the first flight for the husband-and-wife team's Pet Airways, the first-ever all-pet airline, took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y.

All commercial airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin. Others must travel as checked bags or in the cargo hold — a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly.

Binder and Wiesel used their consulting backgrounds and business savvy to start Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet of five planes according to new four-legged requirements, dealing with FAA regulations and setting up airport schedules.

The two say they're overwhelmed with the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities — New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest U.S. airlines.

For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. Pets (about 50 on each flight) will be escorted to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a "Pet Lounge" for future fliers to wait and sniff before flights.

The company will operate out of smaller, regional airports in the five launch cities, which will mean an extra trip for most owners dropping off their pets if they are flying too. Stops in cities along the way means the pets will take longer to reach a destination than their owners.

A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time, dinner, and bunk for the night before finishing the trip the next day.

need advice for car accident with allstate insurance?

My boyfriend got into an accident 2 weeks ago. Basically it was a 5-car pileup. The two cars in front of my boyfriend left the scene because they had no damage. The lady (Lexus driver and Allstate insurance carrier) who actually hit a Toyota Corolla (Traveler's Insurance carrier), which in turn hit my boyfriend's Ford Escort is not returning phone calls and did not give a statement to Allstate. She did give a statement to the Corolla's insurance company but basically claimed that the Corolla hit the Escort then hit her Lexus, which makes no sense because the Corolla didn't back up!

He got estimates on his bumper from the Allstate and Travelers insurance companies which came back between $1100-$1600. He just wants to do a cash in lieu and get it fixed by a friend of his. Is it possible for him to just go after the Corolla's insurance company or does he have to continue to wait for the Allstate's policy holder to respond back to Allstate?!
Note: the Allstate driver has not given a verbal statement to Allstate nor Traveler's Insurance. That is the problem he is having. Allstate has since sent a letter to their person saying that they will drop her from Allstate if she does not give a statement. What will happen if she does not respond to Allstate is dropped!?!

Will there be any naval battles in my lifetime?

I have just recently joined the navy and work on a carrier escort. I was wondering, with the way things are going with china on the verge of collapse and soon their only way out will be war and will probably attack Taiwan. There is a law that says we will come to their aid if china attacks. So, within the next 10-15 years, do you think there will be a naval battle or more than one.

After April 1st 2009 Ryan air will no longer transport unacompanied passangers under 18.? Is this true?

Starting April 1 Ryan air will no longer allow 14-17 year old to travel unacompanied. This means that all passangers under 18 after April 1 2009 will have to have an adult passanger with them on every flight.

Easyjet will still allow passangers as young as 14 to travel alone. Air lingus will still let children as young as 12 travel alone without supervision. British airways will also allow passangers as young as 12 travel without a parent or escort service.

How will other European and north American airlines respond to Ryan airs policy? I think Ryan airs new policy that will go affect on April 1st is a little too extreme. Will other European airlines end up getting the child passangers who are now going to be too young to fly Ryan air or will other airlines raise their flying alone age to 18?

I'm way past age 18. When I was a teen in the 1990s I flew alone to visit family.

No north American carrier has this strict of a policy that Ryan air is going to adopt in April 2009.
Here is the new policy from Ryan Airs website:

Children under the age of 14 years must always be accompanied on the same reservation by a passenger over 16 years. AS AND FROM THE 1st APRIL 2009 ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS MUST ALWAYS BE ACCOMPANIED ON THE SAME RESERVATION.
On a different section of the Ryan air terms website I found this:

Children under the age of 14 years must always be accompanied on the same reservation by a passenger over 16 years. AS FROM THE 1st APRIL 2009 ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 YEARS MUST ALWAYS BE ACCOMPANIED ON THE SAME RESERVATION.

Dear Abby,

I am a crack dealer in Beaumont , Texas who has recently been diagnosed as a carrier of HIV virus. My parents live in Fort Worth and one of my sisters, who lives in Pflugerville, is married to a cross-dresser.

My father and mother have recently been arrested for growing and selling marijuana. They are financially dependent on my other two sisters, who are also weed dealers in Dallas .

I have two brothers, one is currently serving a non-parole life sentence at Huntsville for the murder of a teenage boy in 1994. My other brother is currently in jail awaiting charges of murder.

I have recently become engaged to marry a former escort who lives in Longview . She now is a part time "working girl".

All things considered, my problem is this. I love my fiance' and look forward to bringing her into the family. I certainly want to be totally open and honest with her.

Should I tell her about my cousin who supports Barack Obama for President?

How many are there? Are they reinfoced by older carries ?'

I've seen differing sizes of carriers - some with choppers - some carrying troops and supplies. Some of these reputed to stand close-in-shore to unload or take off troops or whatever.

I assume they are split into various categories - doing different jobs - fare removed from their mighty counterparts with their vast bulks and escort groups attached

Are they ever used as hospital ships to treat wounded ?

Why would the Israeli army raid an orphanage and schools?

Thousands of Palestinian orphans on Tuesday took to the streets in this southern West Bank town to protest recent raids by the Israeli occupation army of their orphanages and boarding schools.

Hundreds of Israeli troops, backed up by armored carriers, raided the Islamic Charitable Society in downtown Hebron earlier this week , vandalizing property and looting hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of food materials, clothes, shoes and furniture donated by local and foreign donors for the benefit of the orphans.

The charitable society, the largest in Palestine, runs two orphanages and several boarding schools, which cater for as many as 7000 children who have lost either or both parents.

Why do such acts?

Cold War Vets Remember When?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Russian bomber aircraft approached a U.S. aircraft carrier off the Korean coast on Wednesday and was intercepted by American fighter jets -- the second such incident in less than a month, U.S. defense officials said.

According to the U.S. officials, a Russian bomber came within three to five nautical miles and flew 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships.

Two U.S. F/A-18 fighters were launched to intercept the Russian aircraft and escort it out of the area, according to one defense official.

Russian bombers over the past year have increased their flights near U.S. territory and U.S. naval assets, demonstrating their long-range strike capability.

In February, two Russian bombers approached the Nimitz near Japan and one flew over the carrier, escorted by a U.S. fighter jet. That was the first Russian overflight of a U.S. carrier since 2004.

Dream Interpretation needed, please...?

It started off like some old Discovery Channel documentary on the Civil War, it was following a 13 year old black boy who decided to take up arms and protect his little forrest village from the confederate soldiers....the boy knew the woods really well, could get to other towns in secret and such...

Well, all of a sudden I'm in the town with my cat Benson, who's in one of those baby carriers that attach to the parents body, only he was on the side of me instead of the front/back. I had an old as dirt hunting bow, Robin Hood style, and 1 arrow. I go up to the little black kid and tell him I need to get through this cave system and escort this woman to the other side, he says okay....and he leads the way.

Upon entering the cave, I sortof take over the black kids body, learn everything he knows, take his wardrobe, and begin venturing through the cave. We come to a point where we're on this upper level, and we see a passageway that leads to a well lit room, and there is someone in
there.....the little girl referred to the person inside as either a "bandit" or "marauder". We hide, try to stay out of sight until we can get a good look of the person back there, but I can't seem to open my eyes...I look down to see how far it'd be to drop from this level to the bottom level. As I drop down, I actually start sliding on tje comforter that's on my bed....which somehow safely brings me to floor level. I manage to hold onto my cat, my bow and arrow, and also catch the woman in one hand...

We start walking through this passageway that has a little incline. There is a locked steel door halfway on the left side of the tunnel, and a big double door, locked, at the far end. As soon as we start walking to the double doors, this creepy as music starts playing and I see a rat probably a foot in size, hoping towards us, I kill it somehow, and then it's mother comes after me....I pull out my arrow and attempt to string it, but the mommy rat bites me and I contract some rat d
Managing to string the arrow, I shoot the mom rat and the music stops. I pull out the arrow, wipe it off on some plastic wrapper I find, and then make my way up to the woman, who says the double doors are locked. As I try and open in, she starts freaking out because we see light coming from the other end, and all of a sudden, the guy we were trying to identify on the top level comes walking through with a lantern and a bunch of goods. He drops the goods, pulls out his bow and arrow, and take aim for the woman. He doesn't see me standing there, so I pull out my arrow, take aim, and fire.......right into his head. It does nothing, he begins running towards the girl, I gtry to trip him...nothing happens, and then my real life friends start appearing. My buddy Dingmann shoots the dude in the head, he falls, says something to me...then I grab his legs and swing his body around, smashing him into the wall...killing him.

I think it's done, then all of a sudden all of these cult memb
members start filling the cave, trying to reach that woman....I'm pulled to the opposite end of the passageway, trying to fight through these cultists who all look the same; shiny shoulder length straight black hair, black eyes, white skin, no emotion in their faces. My buddy Dingmann pulls me though to the double door, I tell him we're fucked, and he says "I've got something for you, you want box seats for this". He opens up the double doors to reveal a movie theatre. I run into the box seats, sit down, and wait......Dingmann presses a button and I see a chain reaction of atomic bombs going off, filling the passageway but not entering the theatre. Cool beans and all, and when the smoke clears, I see a little group of children laughing and having fun. I look at Dingmann, he shruggs, and I'm like "WTF?!". I walk down the passageway to get a better look at the kids, who are dressed in civil war era clothing, and I also see some other kids playing in a jacuzzi.

Aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in Vietnam - When? How many times?

During the Vietnam War, the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne was sent to Vietnam as an escort to troop ship HMAS Sydney.

I'm trying to find out for a research project how many times Melbourne escorted Sydney to/from Vietnam, and when these escort runs occured.

If anyone could help me with the information (as well as providing a source for that info), I would be very appreciative
Replies to answers:
Melbourne was not involved in the Faulklands War - that was here intended successor, HMS Invincible. She did go to Vietnam, but ONLY as an escort vessel for HMAS Sydney

I am aware of the two collisions, but that is not what the question is about. The question is about escort deployments to Vietnam

Need some serious oppinoons on a book idea (please dont act stupid about it)?

It is the near future (like tommorrow maybe) and India and Pakistan are going to war with each other. (this is very possible). The US has a small marine detachment in india but have been refused access to the war zone. A small yield nuclear tipped artillery shell explodes in Pakistan and threatens to start world war III between the two.

A rogue Russian general has just made a deal with China for some very advanced technology torpedoes code name: Turtle, they are undetectable to sonar.

The US president agrees to send a small RRF (Rapid Response Force) into the Indian Ocean and around the crisis zone to try to help end it.

Chinese subs equiped with the new torpedo intercept the US naval force (2-3 carriers plus escorts) and devastate it.

The US military is stretched across the globe and is in bad position to back up anythijng in Asia.

China invades (with N. korea), S. Korea, Taiwan, Spratleys, Kaziskstan, Kajistan (both for oil), and pressures with nuclear threats, Japan into
staying out of the fighting, there are some exchanges between the two countries but Japan demands the US withdraws from Japan under the peace treaty with China.

Now the US, NATO, Britian, and a few other countries must find ways to fight a war they cant even get close to, much less win it.

In the end it will come down to the fact that China needs oil (they import 70% or more) of their natural resources one of which is oil in a major way.

So we fight them to bleed em anywhere we can.

problem is that China has a military (capability) of 650 million soldiers.

So as i said it comes down to stopping em from being able to move troops, tanks and such and finally pushing.

we discover the turtles eventually and find how to destroy them and the subs carrying them.
a war where we have no tactical advantage.

all most every war we've fought we've had a good chance at winning.

For once were back in Dec 8th 1941.

Should there be a ban on Babies and Toddlers in movies rated PG-13 and R?

I went to see Transformers yesterday with my wife. It was a late afternoon showing. The clan sitting yesterday had a baby in a carrier that kept playing with the sun shield, making a noise that sounded like cardboard being ripped. The clan’s second brat was three or four years old decided to stand on the stairs to the exit and screech, whine, cry, and bitch for twenty straight minutes. Mom made a half hearted attempt at shutting her spawn up then proceeded to laugh with the woman she came in with at her brats antics. After getting sick of this my Wife and I told the clan to control their kid, leading to the Father telling me in broken English to say it to his face. Rather then throw down in a crowded theater, I went and got the manager who proceeded to escort them out to the theaters applause and the clan cursing me in Spanish.

Now I know some people will say that Parents need a break too and all of that, and I agree. But I did not pay $15 to go to the movies to listen to these uncontrolled brats. This was a PG-13 rated film and they should have had the courtesy to get a babysitter. I have seen Parents bring Toddlers into an R rated horror flick and listened to them scream in terror at every little thing. I am getting sick of it.

What ever happened to the Royal navy? Can we cast adrift Tony Blair?

Ok... im sick and tired of our leaders broken promises... We have no new carriers, only one new destroyer on the water (which will be at least a year working up) and the rest of the escort program has been reduced to 6 hulls (i doubt if we see more then 4!). We have 10 knot assault ships, a fleet without fuel and our subs will wear out long before the astutes are ready (and we will be lucky to see more then 2 of them!!!).

So, what happend? did IQ's drop at the admiralty or did they all lose their spines one night? I have been a defence writer for 10 years now and i have had way tooo much.... in fact im about ready to break a number of sacred trusts... going political and kicking up a regular S$%T STORM would be so tempting right now... do you think the public will understand why we have blown the defence budget for the next 5 years on paperwork... with out a single new ship commisioning? I know i dont.
Anyone got any insights?
Note: once upon a time i might have been less inclined to be "sensational" but not now. The programs are shrinking.. it was once 14 new destroyers...now its 6 with one ready for trials and two on slip... if the fourth shows up i will eat my keyboard. Also the sub situation is worse, we need 6 ssn's in full commision at all times.. when the last two s class payoff we will be able to operate 5 tops... when the T's start paying off it will only get worse and the Barrow yard state on the record that only 2 are on order....DO THE MATH! (to the navy officer...we infantry types cant add up beyond ten you know old chap...so perhaps you can explain how the situation isnt so bad?).

"It is upon the navy..." winston knew what he was talking about
pps... the astute will launch yes...but working up will take forever as its a new class and we can thus expect at least three years before its in service.
ppps... bugger! im out of gin, anyone got a bottle of saph spare?
Join the army? the only mob worth joining was axed a while ago... and im not joining the bloody duke of lanc's! Im a Border lad or nothing... so much for one of the oldest regt in the uk order of battle :(

What was the final tally of ships sunk or captured on both sides? You may include (SS) Submarines. Don't count ships lost during storms or that collided with friendlies--unless they were later captured by the enemy. e.g., US destroyer Borie (DD-215), which had an epic battle with German sub U-405, would be listed in that tally because it sunk as a result of battle, namely, a gaping hole in its bow after an attempt at ramming U-405. (A wave caught the bow just as it was about to ram the German tin can, and dropped the bow on the U-boat's tail fin, causing the hole. U-405 sunk too.) But only Japanese and US boats, please...
